Hi, I’m Meredith Masony from That’s Inappropriate.

Traditional communication advice during quarantine sounded like: “Schedule weekly check‑ins, use ‘I’ statements, stay calm.” Lovely in theory…while your kids are screaming, someone’s on Zoom, and you have not peed alone in 46 days.

What I do differently:

  • Radical honesty with humor – I show the real mess: snapping at your partner, eye rolls, silent treatments, then laughing about it. That honesty makes people feel seen, not judged.
  • Micro‑conversations – Instead of big “relationship summits,” it is tiny check‑ins in the kitchen, in the car, while hiding in the pantry.
  • Validation of frustration – I do not pretend you should be zen; I normalize being touched out, annoyed, and over it, so you can talk without shame.
  • Connection through comedy – When you can laugh together about how bad the day was, you are already halfway to communicating better.

What part of communicating with your partner during quarantine has been the hardest for you?
