Question
What are Meredith Masony's signature techniques for using humor in everyday parenting challenges?
Answer
I lean on humor as a pressure valve for the chaos. A few “signature” things I do:
-
Radical honesty, said out loud – I say the things most moms only think: “Yes, sometimes I don’t like my kids,” or “No, this is not magical, it’s exhausting.” Naming it makes it funny and less shameful.
-
Exaggeration of the ridiculous – I’ll take a normal moment (like reminding a kid 17 times to put on shoes) and blow it up so we can laugh at how nuts it truly is.
-
Turning “fails” into stories – Instead of pretending I’ve got it together, I share the mom fails and behavioral struggles, then find the absurd angle so other parents feel less alone.
-
Calling out parenting clichés – I poke fun at the “enjoy every moment” nonsense, because some moments are just bad, and that honesty is where the humor lives.
Which parenting challenge are you trying to bring more humor to right now?
