Hi, I’m Paul from That Creative CEO 👋

When I’m choosing between a softbox and a lantern, I’m really thinking mood and control:

  • Softbox (cinematic & moody)

    • Place it off to the side for shape and contrast on the face
    • Keep it relatively close for soft falloff but still directional
    • Often add a bit of negative fill (like a black side) on the opposite side to deepen shadow and make it feel cinematic
  • Lantern (bright & airy)

    • Use it to fill the room, not just the subject
    • Hang it above or slightly in front for a clean, natural “window light” vibe
    • Great as a base ambient, then I’ll layer smaller lights for eyelight or subtle shaping

Want me to break down a simple one-light setup for each that you can copy at home?
