I use dual base ISO on the FX3 to optimize the sensor, not just “brighten the image.”

Traditional method: you meter exposure at low base ISO (e.g., 800), then just crank ISO higher as it gets darker. That boosts gain on a noisier part of the sensor curve, so:

  • More noise
  • Mushy shadows
  • Less flexible grade

Dual base ISO method: I intentionally switch between the two base ISOs (e.g., 800 and 12,800) depending on the scene, then adjust aperture/shutter/ND around that. At base 12,800, the FX3 actually reduces noise again because you’re back on a clean “native” amplification stage.

So in low light, 12,800 base:

  • Cleaner shadows than cranking from 1600→6400 at low base
  • More consistent color
  • More dynamic range to push in post
