Answer
Hi, I’m Paul Rogers from thatcreativeceo. Love this question.
Here’s my definitive white balance guide the way I teach it:
- Stop using AWB (Auto White Balance). It constantly shifts and kills your colors, especially skin tones.
- Grab a plain white sheet of paper. Printer paper works great.
- Go to your camera’s Custom White Balance setting. (On most cameras it’s in the WB or shooting menu.)
- Fill the frame with the paper in the actual lighting you’ll be shooting in. No shadows, no color spill if possible.
- Set / store that as your custom WB. Your camera will lock that temperature in.
- Shoot with that custom WB selected. No more blue skin, no more orangey mess, and your colors stay consistent shot to shot.
If the light changes a lot (move indoors → outdoors, golden hour → night), just repeat the process. It literally takes 10 seconds.
What camera or phone are you shooting on right now?
