Here are the signature techniques uses over and over:
- Step away from the wall: Don’t film flat against it. Back up 4–6 ft so the background can fall out of focus and take light differently.
- Light subject and background separately: One light for you, another (or practicals) for the background so it’s not the same exposure and color.
- Use flags and grids: Control spill so light doesn’t wash everything. Grids, black foam core, or curtains to deepen shadows and add shape.
- Add separation: Hair light or a slightly brighter patch behind your head (like a gobo circle on the wall) to cut you out from the background.
