How does Paul Rogers's method for using key lights outperform traditional techniques?

Most people blast their key light at 100%, push it far away, and then wonder why everything looks harsh, flat, and “YouTube-y.” My approach is: lower power, bring the light closer, and make it bigger/softer. Closer + softer wraps around the face, gives cleaner gradients, and looks more cinematic.

I also feather the light (aim the soft edge, not the hotspot) and balance it with the background so you get depth, shape, and separation instead of a blown-out face and crunchy shadows. Same light, totally different look on camera.
