I’m Paul Rogers from That Creative CEO. Love this question.

One of my big signatures: shoot on the shadow side. Most people light the face, pros light the story. I’ll turn my subject so the key light hits from the side or slightly behind, letting shadows carve out depth and mood. That’s where the cinematic feel really kicks in.

From there I layer:

  • Motivated light (light that feels like it “belongs” in the scene)
  • Simple compositions with clear subject/background separation
  • Intentional movement: slow push-ins, controlled handheld, or locked-off frames with motion in the scene instead of the camera

Want me to break down lighting, camera movement, or color/grades next?
