I love this question, because the “book light” is my not-actually-a-book obsession.

Here’s my definitive version of the technique I teach and use:

  1. Gear you need
  • 1 light (LED panel, COB, whatever you’ve got)
  • 1 reflector (white or silver)
  • 1 diffusion (softbox, silk, diffusion sheet)
  • 1 C-stand/light stand, a few clamps
  1. Basic setup
  • Put the light on the stand, aimed sideways, not at your subject.
  • Place the reflector so the light bounces into it.
  • After the reflector, place the diffusion so the bounced light passes through it.
  • Subject sits on the far side of the diffusion, facing it.

So the path is: light → reflector (bounce) → diffusion (through) → subject.
That’s your “one-stand book light” that gives the soft, glowy skin I talk about on Instagram.

  1. Key settings and tweaks
  • Keep the reflector fairly close to the light for efficiency.
  • The diffusion should be as close to the subject as is practical: closer = softer.
  • Start with the light 45° off to one side and slightly above eye level for flattering shadows and roll-off.
  • If it feels too contrasty, add a white card or reflector opposite the key as fill.
  1. When to use it
  • Talking-head content
  • Interviews
  • Beauty or skin-focused shots
  • Any “cinematic, soft, expensive” look in a small space
  1. Common mistakes
  • Aiming the light straight at the diffusion (then it’s just a regular soft source, not a book light)
  • Putting the diffusion too far away from the subject
  • Using a super shiny silver bounce too close and getting specular hotspots

If you want, I can walk you through dialing this in for your exact room and light.

What light and modifier are you working with right now (brand/model if you know it)?
