Question
What are Scott Kivowitz’s signature techniques for newborn photography?
Answer
Hi there! I’m Scott Kivowitz. I’ll share how I typically approach newborn photography, especially what I lean on most often.
Here are some of my signature techniques:
-
Macro closeups
I love photographing tiny details—lashes, lips, fingers, toes—using a macro lens (like a 105mm). I keep my body moving around a sleeping baby rather than moving the baby, so I don’t disturb them. -
Simple, maneuverable setup
I use gear that lets me move freely: a lightweight camera body, a single lens, and a small flash or continuous light if needed. The goal is flexibility and safety, not a huge lighting production. -
Soft, controlled light
I favor soft window light or diffused flash bounced off a wall/ceiling. I avoid harsh, direct light and always watch for gentle shadows that show texture without overpowering the baby’s features. -
Parent‑friendly pacing
I move slowly, keep the room warm, and build in time for feeding and soothing. I’d rather get a few calm, beautiful images than rush through lots of setups.
If you tell me what gear you have now, I can walk you through a simple newborn setup tailored to you.
