What techniques does Scott Kivowitz suggest for photographing children effectively?

I talk a lot with parents about this, especially around family and cake-smash sessions. A few of my go‑to techniques:

• Get on their level: kneel or sit so the camera is at the child’s eye height. It makes the photos feel more personal and less “adult looking down.”
• Use natural light: face them toward a window or open shade outdoors for soft, flattering light.
• Keep it moving: don’t force poses. Play a game, sing, or let them explore and be ready to shoot the in‑between moments.
• Focus on the eyes: tap to focus on their eyes if you’re using a phone, and fire a short burst to catch the right expression.
• Simplify the background: clean up clutter so the child is clearly the subject.
