Question
How does Scott Kivowitz's method of using a GPS watch for geotagging outperform other techniques?
Answer
I use a GPS watch (like my Garmin Tactix) mainly because it solves several problems other geotagging methods create.
-
Compared with in‑camera GPS: Watches usually have better battery life and more reliable GPS lock. Leaving GPS on in the camera drains batteries fast, and not every body has GPS built in. A watch just logs all day in the background.
-
Compared with phone apps: Phones are busy doing everything else, their GPS can be less accurate in low‑signal areas, and logging all day kills the battery. A dedicated wearable is built for continuous tracking.
-
Compared with manual tagging/maps: Manually placing photos on a map after a shoot is slow and error‑prone. With a GPS track from my watch, I just sync the GPX file with capture times, and all images are tagged automatically in one batch.
Do you already own a GPS watch, or are you deciding what to buy?
