I lean toward a simple, inexpensive tabletop setup that you can build from basic supplies rather than fancy studio gear.

From my product photography video, here’s what I recommend starting with:

  • Foam board in different sizes and colors from an art store (Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc.)
    • White for backgrounds and reflectors
    • Other colors for creative backgrounds
  • A few hardware-store clamps to hold and prop the foam boards
  • Any camera and lens you already own, plus window light or a basic continuous light

If you tell me what space and budget you have, I can suggest a more specific gear list for you.
