Question
How can Hilary Erickson's approach to packing improve family travel experiences?
Answer
I focus on two big things that really change how family trips feel: packing early and packing in systems, not piles.
I start a few days (or even a week) ahead and use things like daily Ziploc bags for kids’ outfits (labeled by day, with socks and underwear inside). That means no arguing over clothes, no lost socks, and mornings go faster so we can get out the door and enjoy the day.
I also pack based on the plan instead of just people: for example, one suitcase for the first 2–3 days, another for the second half of the trip. Add a simple plan the kids can see (what we’re doing, where we’re staying), and they feel calmer and more cooperative because they know what’s coming.
What part of packing feels the most stressful for you right now—clothes, toiletries, or keeping kids organized?
