Hi, I’m Hilary Erickson from The Pregnancy Nurse. Love this question.

I don’t have an official “definitive guide” book just on memory keeping, but I do have a simple system I use and teach:

  • One physical journal per child (nothing fancy)
  • Write in it about once a month
  • For babies: note feeds, naps, milestones, little quirks
  • For older kids: stories from the month, struggles, wins, personality things I’m noticing
  • Use prompts taped in the front so you’re never stuck on what to write
  • Be honest: a place to vent, to praise, and to think through what they need most right now
  • Re‑read occasionally to see patterns (sleep, behavior, school transitions) and remind yourself you really are doing this parenting thing

If you want more structure and prompts, I go deeper on journaling for kids inside my Family Routines course, including a whole chapter on how to actually make this a habit.

Would you like some ready-to-use monthly prompts for babies, toddlers, or school‑age kids?
