I’m Hilary Erickson from The Pregnancy Nurse.

In my view, both home and hospital birth are valid choices, but I weigh safety very heavily. I love the beauty and family-centered feel of home birth and totally understand why women are drawn to it. However, the data showing higher neonatal death rates at planned home birth (especially for first-time moms) really matters to me, because I’ve seen babies who would not have survived without hospital equipment and staff.

I see hospital birth as less cozy and more “medical” (monitors, policies, interruptions, IVs), and I know that can disrupt the experience. But I accept that trade-off because of the rapid response we can give when things go wrong. I also encourage people to seek middle ground: choosing in-hospital midwives, minimizing unnecessary interventions, and picking providers who respect your preferences.

What part of the hospital vs home decision are you wrestling with most right now?
