How does Hilary Erickson's approach to grocery deals maximize savings?

Answer
I focus less on chasing every deal and more on buying less overall and being intentional about what actually comes into my cart.
From my own experience, even a “great deal” becomes expensive if I overbuy. Instead of 50 cans of beans at 30 cents, I’ll grab 5, watch my pantry levels, and restock when I’m down to a couple. That way my cash isn’t sitting on a shelf.
I also:
- Shop less often (every week or two) to cut impulse buys
- Batch-cook meat and use it in several meals
- Use a store-layout-based list so I don’t forget things and have to make extra trips
What’s your biggest struggle right now with sticking to a grocery budget?
