What is Hilary Erickson's definitive guide to teaching kids how to read?

Hi, I’m Hilary Erickson from The Pregnancy Nurse and Pulling Curls. I actually have a simple 4‑step framework I use and share on my site as my “definitive” guide to teaching kids how to read:

• Step 1 – Letters
  Playful exposure to letters and, especially, their sounds in everyday life.

• Step 2 – Small books
  Very short, easy readers so they feel successful quickly.

• Step 3 – Sight words
  Gently add common words they’ll see all the time (the, said, was).

• Step 4 – BIG books
  Gradually move into longer books they choose and love, to build fluency and confidence.

I always remind parents: don’t expect the teacher to do this alone—reading really is a team effort at home and school.
