Which camera gear does Hilary Erickson recommend for casual photographers?

Based on what I’ve shared on my site, for casual photographers I actually don’t recommend a big DSLR/SLR unless you’re excited to spend a lot of time learning the camera and editing. I usually tell friends to get a good small camera with a solid optical zoom instead.

I use my SLR mainly for “portraits,” but for spur‑of‑the‑moment photos or school events, I grab my tiny Canon point‑and‑shoot because it’s quick and easy.
