Answer
Hi, I’m Hilary Erickson from The Pregnancy Nurse.
Based on what I’ve shared on Pulling Curls and the podcast, I tend to approach big transitions (like moving a child to college or moving aging parents) with a few core themes that also apply when you’re moving with younger kids:
- It’s okay to have mixed emotions. I talk openly about grieving the picture you thought you’d have, while still being excited about what’s next. The same goes for kids who are sad, mad, or thrilled about a move.
- I try to normalize that everyone in the family may experience the change differently and at different times, and that doesn’t make anyone “wrong.”
- I’m big on practical prep: giving kids some control (letting them pick or pack some of their own things), involving them in decisions age-appropriately, and using checklists so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
- I also emphasize not over-controlling the process as they get older—letting them take more responsibility (like I did with my son buying his own college items) so the move becomes part of their growing independence.
If you tell me your kids’ ages and what kind of move you’re facing (across town vs. across the country), I can share more specific ideas you can use with them.
