Answer
Hi there!
Based on what I’ve shared publicly, a few patterns define how I handle raised beds efficiently, especially in an urban farm setting with a lot of space to cover:
- Modular beds: I use multiple raised beds instead of one big plot so I can expand in phases, rotate crops easily, and focus labor where it’s most needed.
- Mulch everywhere: I lean heavily on mulch between and inside beds to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and cut down on constant watering and weeding.
- Batch building and planting: Beds go in as “waves” (you’ll see this in my “more raised beds going in” posts), so lumber, soil, and labor are concentrated instead of piecemeal.
- Community help and systems: I plan work days with volunteers and donors, matching big tasks (like spreading that first truck of mulch) with many hands, not just my own muscles.
