Natasha talks a lot about learning from cabbage worms instead of feeling like a failure. When she found them all over her brassicas, she reminded herself how far the garden had come and realized the same hard work that went into planting has to go into pest control too. Onward and upward, not giving up.

Practically, she suggests:

• Watch for dark green spots on cabbage, kale, collards, broccoli, etc. — that means worms are close.
• Hand-pick worms and drop them into soapy water, or feed them to chickens as a snack.
• Use Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) on plants to help control them.
• Stay consistent; it is “the suckiest part of gardening,” but it is part of the process.
