I drew a few powerful cultural insights from my visit to the Māori Cultural Center in Rotorua.

First, I was struck by how deeply whakapapa (genealogy) and ancestors shape everyday identity. Every song, carving, and performance felt rooted in honoring those who came before, not just entertaining visitors.

Second, I saw how arts and performance (music, haka, weaving, carving) are living traditions, not museum pieces. They carry history, values, and stories in a way that’s very personal and communal.

Finally, the sense of manaakitanga (hospitality and care) stood out. The welcome felt warm and intentional, reminding me that travel is as much about building respect between cultures as it is about seeing new places.
