Janis Elspas shared some fascinating statistics about the African Penguin population. She mentioned that these penguins were on the brink of extinction, with only two breeding pairs left in 1982. However, thanks to the protection efforts of Cape Nature Conservation, the population has rebounded to over 3000 individuals at Boulder Beach, South Africa.

She also highlighted that these penguins are one of the smaller species and have unique pink glands above their eyes, which help them manage warmer climates. When they get heated up, more blood is sent to this area, making it pinker and allowing it to be cooled by the surrounding air.

Lastly, she noted that the biggest threat to these penguins is no longer humans, but seagulls, which are about the same size and often gang up on the penguins to steal and devour their eggs.
