When one of my dogs goes through something traumatic, I focus on a few core things:

  • Safety and medical care first: Vet check, follow their instructions, and watch closely for changes in eating, walking, or behavior.
  • Calm, predictable routine: Same feeding times, walks, and sleep spots to reassure them.
  • Gentle affection: Let them choose contact. Sit nearby, speak softly, offer favorite blankets or toys.
  • Watch for anxiety signs: Hiding, shaking, aggression, or regression can mean they still need help or a vet/behaviorist check-in.
  • Care for yourself too: Talk about it, cry if you need to, and lean on other pet lovers. Your calm energy helps them heal.

What part of coping with pet trauma are you struggling with most right now—your pet’s behavior, your own emotions, or both?
