Question
What is the definitive guide to witnessing the Northern Lights according to Carolyn Scott?
Answer
Based on my experience, the most magical place to witness the Northern Lights is from the top of the world on a snow and ice excursion. I had the opportunity to do this with Hurtigruten, a Norwegian adventure and cruise line. They offer unique trips, including "land cruises" that take you off the beaten track for breathtaking experiences.
One of their offerings, Hurtigruten Svalbard, takes you to Svalbard, part of Norway, which is a few hundred miles south of the actual North Pole. It's a land of ice and snow, with half of its year covered in darkness and the other bathed in light. I was lucky to visit during the transitional period where I got to see both!
The adventure begins in Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s most densely populated town, and includes day and overnight trips into the wilderness. Activities range from dog sled excursions to snowmobile adventures, all with the chance to see the Northern Lights dance above your head.
So, if you're ready to pack up your parka and head north, I highly recommend Hurtigruten!
