Answer
Supporting a grieving spouse is not about a single “definitive guide,” but there are principles taught again and again in my work:
- Witness, don’t fix – Your job is to be a calm, nonjudgmental presence. Listen more than you speak. Avoid clichés and advice unless asked.
- Accept their timeline – Grief is not linear or “one year and done.” Let them repeat stories, cry, be angry, be numb.
- Stay practical – Protect sleep, encourage gentle movement, hydration, and regular meals. Small structure helps when the world feels chaotic.
- Maintain the bond – Talk about the person who died, use their name, share memories. This validates your spouse’s continuing relationship with them.
- Get support for both of you – A grief-informed counselor, groups like Helping Parents Heal or other peer groups, and my GEMS framework (Gratitude, Exercise/Sleep, Mindfulness, Self-care) can hold the two of you while you each grieve in your own way.
