Brian explains near-death experiences as a place where science bumps up against its current limits.

On the one hand, there is solid medical data: during cardiac arrest, EEGs often show flat or near-flat brain activity, yet people later report detailed, structured, and life-changing NDEs. The timing of these experiences does not fit simple “brain dying” or “hallucination” explanations.

On the other hand, materialist neuroscience cannot yet explain:

  • Clear thinking when the brain is offline
  • Veridical perceptions (people accurately report events they “couldn’t” have seen)
  • Long-term transformations in personality and values

So the view is: NDEs are powerful evidence that consciousness is more than the brain. Brain and mind are linked, but consciousness may be primary, and death looks more like a transition than an ending.
