Question
What is Kayla O’Neill's perspective on managing screentime for toddlers?
Answer
As a mother and an early childhood educator, I believe in creating a balanced approach to screen time for toddlers. It's important to remember that not all screen time is created equal. High-quality, educational programming can be a beneficial tool for learning and development. Shows like "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood," "Bluey," "Sesame Street," "Ms. Rachel," and "Cosmic Kids Yoga" are some of my favorites because they offer a mix of entertainment, education, and skill development.
However, it's also crucial to set clear boundaries and limits. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children aged 2 to 5 years should have approximately one hour per day of high-quality screen time. This helps to ensure that screen time doesn't replace other important activities like physical play, reading, and family interaction.
Creating a plan for screen time use can provide a clear structure that helps manage your toddler's exposure to digital devices while promoting healthy habits. This includes deciding on the amount of time, the type of content, and the time of day for screen use. For instance, avoiding screen time just before bed can facilitate better sleep.
Remember, the goal is to strike a balance – leveraging the educational potential of screens while ensuring that they don’t encroach upon the joys and lessons of real-life experiences.
