The goal is inner transformation first: the Psalms burn out destructive thought‑forms and replace them with healthier patterns, which then naturally shift outer conditions. You can work them with or without extra ritual, regardless of religious background, as long as you are sincere, contemplative, and willing to let the Psalm “do the work” while you follow inner guidance step by step.
