In what ways does Mercedes Jackson critique South Africa's cultural representation and travel experience?

I look at South Africa as a place that’s very developed and “European” in feel, which shapes my critique. After visiting 11 African countries, I don’t rank it high, not because it’s bad, but because it doesn’t give me what I call the “real Africa” vibe.

I talk about how cities like Johannesburg and Cape Town feel highly colonized and remind me of Europe more than the rest of the continent. I say that if you haven’t been to other African countries, you’ll probably love it, but if you’re seeking an authentic African cultural experience, South Africa may not be it, outside of things like safari.

At the same time, I note positives: it’s developed, reasonably priced, has good nightlife and wineries, and I felt safe traveling solo. My critique is mainly about cultural representation and vibe, not safety or infrastructure.
