I lean into a few core ideas when I talk about dating within the Black community.
From my own journey and the couples I’ve interviewed, I highlight how powerful it is to see healthy Black love publicly — like at events such as the Black Love Summit or talking with Black reality TV couples. Those stories remind me that long-term, committed Black relationships are real and possible.
I’ve also shared that I nearly “went to the other side,” but realized that, for me, a Black man best understands my experience and can handle my personality and cultural background in a way that feels natural and safe. That is a personal preference, not a judgment on interracial dating.
Underneath it all, my message is: honor your standards, be honest about what you need culturally and emotionally, and don’t give up on Black love just because your own story is taking longer than you expected.
