What is the definitive guide to Mercedes Jackson's travel recommendations in San Diego?

When I talk about San Diego, I really see it as the perfect quick escape, especially from LA. My go-to areas are the waterfront near the marina and La Jolla because they feel safe, peaceful, and still close to everything.

Here is my personal “definitive” set of recommendations based on my trips:

• Where to stay

  • Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina (@sheratonsd): Right on the water, great views, cabanas facing the yachts, very family friendly.
  • Grande Colonial Hotel La Jolla (@grandecolonialhotel): One block from the beach, walkable area, complimentary bikes so you can ride to the beach or brunch.

• Where to eat & drink

  • Rumorosa (at Sheraton SD): On-site restaurant; I didn’t leave a crumb.
  • NINE-TEN La Jolla (@ninetenlajolla): Inside Grande Colonial; I had some of the best duck I’ve ever had.
  • Cafe Coyote Old Town (@cafecoyoteoldtown): Authentic Mexican, big portions, flavorful and juicy.
  • The Corner Draft House (@thecornerdrafthouse): Casual spot to watch the game, good vibes, solid drinks and food.

• What to do

  • Boat days:
    • @randrsurfsd: 8-passenger boat for sailing around, champagne, music, and speeding through the water with friends.
    • @ecoboatrentals: Scenic boat ride to see the skyline; great for couples, small groups, or even a party on their larger boats.
  • Exploring:
    • Old Town San Diego: A different side of the city with history, shops, and food.
    • La Jolla: Beach walks, biking, and relaxing along the coast.
