I don’t actually have a specific breakdown in front of me of how I personally apply the Zone System step by step, but I can share how I approach the idea of it in my landscape work.
I treat the Zone System less as a rigid technical chart and more as a way to pre‑visualize tones:
- I look for a key shadow and a key highlight I want to protect
- I expose so that important highlights aren’t blown, knowing I can lift shadows in post
- I think in “zones” when deciding global vs local dodging and burning, especially in skies, water, and foreground detail
In digital, that translates into careful exposure plus intentional, subtle post‑processing rather than literal zone‑by‑zone metering like in the film days.
