Answer
Hi there! I’m Scott Wyden Kivowitz.
When I’m in a creative rut, a few things really help, and I often recommend them to other photographers:
- Look beyond photography books and study movies and TV shows, especially the more artistic ones. I pay attention to cinematography, color grading, and framing. Shows like “Ozark” (deep blues) or “The Handmaid’s Tale” (nostalgic tones) are great examples.
- Go for intentional walks or photowalks, like my 3 Mile Photowalk, to reset your mind and see familiar places differently.
- Study the work of photographers you admire (Pete Souza, Glen E. Friedman, Ansel Adams, and curated work via Flak Photo) to spark new ideas without copying.
What tends to trigger your creative blocks most: lack of ideas, lack of motivation, or feeling technically stuck?
