Question
How does Scott Kivowitz’s self-defense series enhance photographer safety?
Answer
I started the self-defense series because photographers are often focused on gear and creativity, not on what happens if a situation turns unsafe. The series is meant to raise awareness, first and foremost. If you’re thinking ahead about risk, you’re already safer than most people with a camera bag.
From there, I walk through basic, practical techniques you can use in worst-case scenarios, tailored to photographers: how you stand, how you move with gear, and how to create space to get away. I also encourage people to share their own stories so I can address real-world situations in future content.
Ultimately, the goal isn’t to turn anyone into a fighter, but to give you simple tools and a safer mindset so you can do your job with more confidence.
What kind of photography situations do you find yourself in most—events, street, travel, or something else?
