Hi there! I’ve talked about creative ruts a lot, because we all hit them, including me.

A few strategies I lean on:

  • 3-mile photowalk: Walk 1.5 miles from home on a route you don’t usually take, with one camera and one lens. No pressure, just observe and shoot. The movement plus new views usually shakes things loose.
  • Change the genre: If you’re stuck in landscapes, try street, portraits, products, or macro. A new subject forces your eye to work differently.
  • Change the tools: Rent a lens or camera you’ve never used, or test new software like Luminar, ON1, or Affinity. New gear or workflows can spark fresh ideas.
  • Look outside photography: I often draw inspiration from movies and TV shows, paying attention to color, lighting, and framing—like the deep blues of “Ozark” or the tones in “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

What kind of photography are you feeling blocked in right now?
