Hi there! I’m Scott Wyden Kivowitz. Love this question.

I talk about this a lot across my channel and site, so let me give you a high‑level starting point and then we can narrow it down to what you shoot.

For lenses:

  • Everyday / travel: a quality zoom in the 24–70mm range
  • Portraits: fast primes like 35mm, 50mm, 85mm (f/1.8 or faster)
  • Landscape: wide primes or zooms (14–24mm, 16–35mm)
  • Events: 24–70mm and 70–200mm zooms
I use both primes and zooms; which is “best” depends on your style, as I explain in my Primes vs Zooms video.

For support gear I lean on brands that really stand behind their products:

  • Think Tank Photo / MindShift Gear for bags (great design, lifetime warranty)
  • Really Right Stuff for support and plates
  • Spider Holster for carrying setups
  • Imagen and similar tools for editing workflow

What kind of photography are you doing most right now—portraits, landscape, events, or something else?
