Question
How does Scott Kivowitz enhance texture in his photographs using software tools?
Answer
I lean on a few core approaches when I want textures to really pop, while still looking natural:
-
In Lightroom (or similar), I’ll often use Clarity and Texture locally, not globally. For example, I might paint extra clarity onto a bicycle, a wall, or wood grain, while leaving the sky and skin softer so they don’t get crunchy.
-
I sometimes combine that with a small contrast boost in those same areas, which helps edges and details stand out.
-
For distracting or overly sharp elements (like busy trees behind a textured building), I’ll actually soften them a bit, so the main subject’s texture feels stronger by comparison.
-
When pushing HDR or heavy contrast, I watch clouds and halos carefully and back off if they start looking fake.
Do you have a specific image or subject where you’d like help enhancing texture?
