As a nurse with over 20 years of OB nursing experience, I've reviewed numerous studies and spoken with countless women about this topic. The consensus among major health organizations, including the CDC, the Surgeon General, and the American College of Obstetricians, is that there is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol can cross the placenta and reach your baby, potentially causing lifelong physical, mental, and behavioral problems known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). While some studies show a correlation between light-to-moderate drinking and developmental problems, the safest option is to abstain from alcoholic drinks during pregnancy. However, this is a personal decision and should be made in conjunction with your healthcare provider.
