Question
What are Hilary Erickson's top strategies for successful potty training?
Answer
Hi, I’m Hilary Erickson from The Pregnancy Nurse. Love that you’re thinking ahead on this one.
From my own kids and what I’ve shared on Pulling Curls, my top potty training strategies are:
-
Use natural consequences: If a child clearly can stay dry but is choosing not to, have them calmly help clean up (change pants, wipe floor, take clothes to washer). No shaming, just cause-and-effect. That’s how my daughter finally cared more about the potty than the mess.
-
Make them part of the process: Have them feel the difference between wet/dry pants, help change themselves, and notice their successes. It builds internal motivation instead of you constantly prompting.
-
Short, focused seasons: When you’re “on,” really commit—frequent fluids, frequent potty tries, lots of praise, minimal distractions.
-
Stay neutral and calm: No big anger over accidents, no big drama. Just, “This is why I like to keep my pants dry,” and move on.
What’s the age of the child you’re working with and have you already started any potty training?
