I focus a lot on reality-based, not fear-based, parenting and on strong communication. That means I try to prepare kids for real life instead of just controlling them so I feel safer.

For common challenges like phones, clothes, and dating, I:

  • Set a few clear boundaries (safety, family values, budget)
  • Give kids room to choose and experiment
  • Then debrief together: what worked, what didn’t, how did it feel?

I also emphasize calm teaching moments. When everyone’s regulated, we talk about chores, routines, or behavior as “problem solving” instead of lecturing. I treat mistakes as data: “What is this showing us you still need help learning?” rather than “What’s wrong with you?”

Underneath it all is the idea that parenting is a marathon. I adjust as I go, admit when I messed up with my older kids, and try to keep things positive so I don’t burn out.

Is there a specific challenge you’re dealing with that you’d like to walk through together?
