Answer
Parents run into a few big challenges when they try to teach reading at home, and I talk about several of them in that episode:
- Not knowing how to teach reading, so they miss simple, playful things (like sound games in the car, letter hunts, or using sticker books and puzzles for letter sounds).
- Feeling like reading instruction has to be formal and “school‑ish,” so it turns into drudgery instead of fun.
- Assuming school will fully “take care of” reading, then discovering later that their child is behind and intervention feels heavier and less motivating.
- Juggling time, other kids, and sometimes tight finances, which makes buying books hard (which is why I’m such a huge fan of using the library as a free resource).
Is there a particular challenge on that list that you’re feeling at your house right now?
