Answer
I talk about our marriage as “pretty normal-hard” rather than tragic or dramatic, which is exactly why I think it’s useful to share. Drew and I generally like each other, but we still get stuck on really common things—especially communication and assumptions about what the other person is thinking.
In that episode, I explain that:
- We were both assuming a lot without checking those assumptions, which blocked real understanding.
- Learning the “speaker–listener” method helped us put surface emotions aside and get to deeper issues.
- I’m naturally a “fighter” who wants to dive in with 16 points ready, and Drew needs time to think, so I now try to say, “I want to talk about X—when would you like to do it?” instead of ambushing him.
- The work we did together also changed how we talk with our kids and even our own parents.
Overall, I describe marriage as hard but workable—and I frame counseling/coaching as normal maintenance, not a sign something is “broken.”
Is there a specific part of marriage dynamics you’re most curious about—communication, conflict style, or balancing parenting and partnership?
