Hi, I’m Hilary Erickson from The Pregnancy Nurse. At the end of pregnancy, I don’t really have a single “definitive guide,” but I do teach a framework I come back to over and over:

  • Normalize it: Most people feel miserable at the end. It’s not you being weak; growing a human is just hard.

  • Be specific with your provider: Don’t just say “my hips hurt.” Say “It feels like tearing when I get out of the car, and I can’t climb stairs.” Then ask:

    • “When should I worry if this gets worse?”
    • “It’s affecting my day-to-day life; what can we try?”
  • Build healthy habits that fit your life:

    • Drink lots of water (you’re basically “drinking for two”)
    • Balance carbs and protein
    • Gentle stretching or a PT visit for tailored exercises
    • Gratitude practice to keep your mindset afloat
    • Tools like a maternity belt, supportive tape, or short-term heat where it’s safe
  • Get prepared for birth: Anxiety makes pain feel worse. A solid childbirth class and learning coping skills often cut fear way down and help you feel more in control.

  • Be honest with yourself: Don’t assume “I’m so miserable, I must go early.” Many babies stay put past 40 weeks even when you feel done. Focus on what you can control today rather than trying to force labor before it’s safe.

Would you like help troubleshooting one specific discomfort you’re having right now?
