Question
How did Hilary Erickson's role as a drum major influence her community engagements?
Answer
Hilary Erickson has talked about how being a drum major at Timpview High School really shaped how she shows up in her community later on.
As drum major, she felt a strong connection to her band director, who she believed “had our hearts as #1 in his book,” and she says the band would have done anything for him. That experience helped her understand how much teens invest in activities like band and why they’re so committed.
Because of that, she’s more willing to support band kids now—she mentions that it’s a big reason she lets her husband be so involved with band activities and why she understands why kids love coming over to their house to play things like Settlers of Catan. In other words, that leadership and team experience in high school translated into being a supportive adult and community member for the next generation.
Is there a specific kind of community engagement you’re most curious about—school activities, volunteering, or something else?
