Hi, I’m Hilary Erickson from The Pregnancy Nurse.

I don’t have a single article literally titled “The Definitive Guide to Pushing During Labor,” but in my materials I teach a very consistent, evidence‑based approach to pushing. The big things I emphasize are:

  • Work with your contractions, don’t hold your breath and push nonstop between them
  • Use positions that open your pelvis (side‑lying, upright, squatting with support) when possible
  • Focus on relaxing your face, jaw, and pelvic floor so baby can move down
  • Listen to your nurse/provider’s coaching, but also tell us what does and doesn’t feel effective

I walk couples through how pushing usually works, positions, breathing, and what to expect from your team inside the Online Prenatal Class for Couples.

Are you mostly wondering about breathing while pushing, positions, or how long pushing can take?
