I talk much more about the dreams, work, and process than a strict shopping list, but based on what I actually use and describe in the posts, here are the core tools and supplies I lean on for starting and running a community garden:

  • Seeds (lots of them): veggies, greens, herbs, and flowers for pollinators
  • Seed-starting containers: trays, cups, and recycled containers that can sit in a sunny room
  • Gardening gloves: I mention getting a pair as a gift and loving them
  • Raised bed materials: lumber or premade beds for 4×4 and 4×8 beds
  • Good soil and compost: rich, dark soil for transplants and beds
  • Vermicomposting setup: a bin, bedding, and red worms for kitchen-scrap compost
  • Basic hand tools: trowels, hand forks, and something for weeding and transplanting
  • Water access: hoses or watering cans, depending on what’s available at the lot
  • Protection: plans for a fence, plus chicken wire if you’re integrating chickens or keeping critters out
  • Optional livestock setup: if you go my route, materials for a small chicken coop and run

As the garden grows, I also recommend a simple system for labeling beds, a notebook or app for planning layouts and tracking planting dates, and a camera or phone for documenting progress (and sharing with your community).

What stage are you at right now—just dreaming, or already looking at a specific piece of land?
