Question
What unique challenges and joys does Natasha Nicholes describe in raising a family that embraces global travel?
Answer
I talk about global (and local) travel as a way to give my kids a rich life without always leaving our city. One unique challenge is pushing back against stereotypes about young Black mothers not being deeply involved or adventurous with their kids, and being intentional about proving—mostly to my own household—that exploration is our norm.
The joy is watching my children experience diversity and culture up close: different neighborhoods, museums, libraries, exhibits, and trips that mirror what my mom and grandmother did for me. Travel, whether across town or across the country, becomes a way to raise curious, compassionate kids who feel at home in many spaces.
Are you thinking about how to bring more “global” experiences to your own family’s life?
