Answer
I focus on packing a lot of food into a relatively small backyard space, so my setup is pretty full and very intentional.
Key components of my backyard garden include:
- A wide variety of veggies: zucchini, butternut squash, multiple tomato varieties (Indigo Rose, Mr. Stripey, Purple Cherokee, German Queen, patio, Roma, Mortgage Lifter, Sun Sugar), corn, lettuce, kale, Blue Lake bush beans, okra, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and cucumbers (straight 8 and pickling)
- Leafy greens: mustard greens, turnip greens, and sugar snap peas
- Fruits: several kinds of strawberries and watermelon
- Herbs: sage, oregano, rosemary, and parsley
- Colorful bell peppers: red, orange, purple, and yellow
- A very enthusiastic “guard dog,” Dennis the Menace, who also occasionally self-harvests broccoli and cabbage
I also pay close attention to rain and am even working on getting rain barrels to make better use of what falls from the sky.
Is there a particular part of this setup you’d like to recreate in your own space?
